“My artwork involves the discovery and exploration of details of our everyday life with ‘essence of living’ as the basis of my art practice,” explained Lau.
Lau Pik Yoke, Agnes (b,1990. Malaysia) is a multidisciplinary artist who works on art pieces with repetitive actions.
Having grown up in the busy city, her love and appreciation of peace of mind grew tremendously. She has always been fascinated by how the art making process helps to calm the chaos within, and this inspires her to create art pieces with repetitive / meditative actions.
Agnes's interest to art was encouraged by her family since early childhood and further developed when she took her Diploma in Graphic Design (2008-2011) and Fine Art (2013-2015); both from Dasein Academy of Art, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
After completing her studies, Agnes delved into her art practice which involved the discovery and exploration on the details of everyday life, with ‘essence of living’ being the foundation of her studio practice. The ordinary yet ignored objects or activities from daily life play a role in her study and she tries to stimulate the reflections through art making processes which enables her to create multiple forms of visual language in her work.
Her work lies between systematic and non-systematic processes produced within a determined time and space. Incorporating both the conscious and unconscious mind, she allows various forms to take place in her work, playing around drawings, paintings and printings on different materials, like paper, canvas, clay and others.
Agnes has been actively exhibiting both locally and abroad including countries like Greece, Macau, Turkey, Singapore, Hong Kong and others. She had her first solo exhibition titled dot dot dot line line line in 2019, and the second, titled soul that repeats in 2022, both at Taksu Gallery in Kuala Lumpur. Her artworks have been collected by the Printmaking Research Centre of Macau, The Museum of Typography in Chania, Greece and etc. In 2020, she received the Highly Commended Painting Prize from the United Overseas Bank (UOB) Painting of the Year Malaysia (Established Artist category). She was the 1st runner-up in the 2020 Visual Art Projects 4 competition organized by MyCreative Ventures and the 2nd runner-up in the 2018 YOUthReka Art competition organized by Nandos Art Initiative.
Agnes is now an artist and a lecturer. She enjoys the moments in helping younger generations develop the same enthusiasm that she has for art and design, inspiring them in furthering their creativity through theoretical and experiential learning.
